It’s incredible but it is estimated that right at this moment over 1 billion people are learning English worldwide.
According to the British Council, in the year 2000 there were as many as 750 million English as a Foreign Language speakers. To add to this, there were 375 million English as a Second Language speakers. The difference between the two groups is that English as a Foreign Language speakers use English occasionally for business or pleasure, while English as a Second Language speakers use English on a daily basis.
These numbers are mainly due to people wanting to do business internationally. The days of working in your office and doing business with your community are slowly dying, as the world is now your marketplace, and the world will demand the use of English.
