IELTS Writing Task 1: A Typical introduction (A)

qq

This post is about looking at IELTS Writing Task 1 introductions only.

A typical model answer for the introduction for the above graph is as follows:

The bar graph provides information about the most common sports played in New Zealand in 2002. It gives figures for both boys and girls and clearly shows that their participation in sports is fairly equal. However, their sporting preferences tend to be different.

As you can see the introduction needs to have 2-3 sentences.

  1. The first sentence needs to clearly state what the graph is showing with all the dates and details:

The bar graph provides information about the most common sports played in New Zealand in 2002.

  1. The second sentence gives more specific details of the contents of the graph highlighting a simple generalisation:

It gives figures for both boys and girls and clearly shows that their participation in sports is fairly equal.

  1. The third sentence leads the reader into the second paragraph by letting them know what information will be discussed next:

However, their sporting preferences tend to be different.

An IELTS Band score 6.0 would expect 2 sentences for the introduction, and a Band score 7.0 would usually (though not always) expect a three sentence introduction.

Always the higher the band score goes to the writing that shows a more sophisticated understanding of what to write rather than the number of words.
