This is a really controversial one, and is full of different interpretations.
A Native teacher is only a teacher who comes from a country where English is the first and only prominent language of the country, e.g. US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa.
Native teacher is a teacher who speaks with native English fluency. This would include these people
- US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa nationalities
- Native English speaking teachers who grew up in an English speaking household in India, Malaysia, Singapore, Nigeria and many other Ex-English colonies and are able to speak English fluently as a native.
- Native English speaking teachers who have attained a Native English speaking level of fluency even though they may not have grown up in an English speaking household. E.g. many European countries e.g. Norway, Sweden, Holland, Hungary etc
Non Native English speaking teachers are considered less able to speak English with fluency and so cannot be considered as knowledgeable of the ‘pure’ language
Non Native English speaking teachers may have English excellence in terms of understanding the language but the accent is too strong and as a result the pronunciation is not as accurate as the Native teachers.
Those Non-native English speaking teachers have a strong understanding of how to learn the language and so are far more able to guide the student as they too understand the pitfalls and difficulties in the language.
Non native English speaking teachers are sometimes considered to have less modern methods of teaching.
Non native English speaking teachers often teach half their lesson in their own language rather than English, so as to help the student, but this means that less English is being spoken and listened to in the class.
Many schools just put a white face in front of the class saying they are native speakers and this will bring in the numbers, however they may be some back=packer they picked up off the street and have no qualifications.
Just because someone has a British accent doesn’t mean they are a good teacher.
Native English teachers are usually paid double the salary of a Non native English teacher, and yet they do the same job.
So tell me, what is your response to this?
