UNRESOLVED ESL POINT No.6: Starting a sentence with ‘And’

As with so many things in the English language you as a teacher spent months and months drumming in the rule that and is a connecting word, it never never never starts a sentence. Then suddenly the students gets to intermediate and they see ‘And’ starting a sentence particularly in novels written by famous literary masters.

They are confused and ask – why teacher, after all this time, now we see that the great writers use ‘And’ all the time to start a sentence.

My question to you is – why is this? Why do we use ‘And’ to start a sentence, when grammatically it just doesn’t make sense to do so.
